The Wassenaarse Slag starts at the Katwijkseweg, between the Rijksdorp villa park and Duinrell, and runs almost three kilometres through the dune edge of Hollands Duin to the beach, along the north side of Meijendel. Live here and you have the dunes beside the house and the North Sea at the end of the road.
A facade feels that. Salt in the air and wind off the sea ask more of hinges and locks, of the finish on aluminium and of sun protection. So we start with the choices that make the difference for windows at the Wassenaarse Slag.
Aluminium is powder-coated in any RAL colour, and this close to the sea you pick a coastal-grade finish. The Aluprof MB-86N is thermally broken and the most popular choice; the Reynaers MasterLine 8 has concealed hardware.
Hinges, locks and handles have a hard time in salt-laden air, so here we recommend corrosion-resistant hardware for both uPVC and aluminium.
External sun protection stops heat before it reaches the glass. Screens keep the view open, folding-arm awnings (knikarmschermen) shade the terrace. Motorised with a sun and wind sensor, the fabric comes down in sunshine and goes up when the wind gets too strong.
A lift-and-slide door opens the back of the house in two, three or four sections, with a low or flush threshold. For minimal sightlines, look at Cortizo COR Vision. For large glass areas, triple glazing (HR+++) with warm-edge spacers insulates better and reduces cold and condensation at the glass edge.
Surface-mounted or built-in roller shutters (rolluiken), manual or electric with switch, remote, app or timer. They insulate, black out, dampen noise and slow down intruders, useful if you are away for a while.
Rijksdorp is a villa district on the edge of the dunes, laid out from 1920 on the grounds of the seventeenth-century Rijksdorp estate. Architect Co Brandes designed the street plan around the old park layout. Before the war villas went up on generous plots; after it, smaller villas filled in the gaps. More than eight in ten homes in the Rijksdorp-De Pan neighbourhood are detached.
Around Duinrell and towards the Slag lies the Buitengebied Duinrell-Wassenaarse Slag neighbourhood, with about a hundred homes. Over forty percent date from before 1945, and a third from 1975 to 1985.

Four stretches of dune edge, each with its own kind of building.
A villa neighbourhood against the dunes, around streets such as Meijboomlaan, Van Bergenlaan and Vleysmanlaan. By the Vleysmanlaan, an early entrance gate and lamp post survive as a municipal monument. North of the road to the Slag lie remains of the German Rijksdorp regimental command post from 1942-1944.
The Duinrell amusement park occupies the seventeenth-century estate of the same name; the beech avenue along the Duinrellweg was its old drive. On the Van Wijnbergenlaan, by the former Vreeburg farm, stands a historicist tower from around 1850, a national monument.
Once called the Schulpweg, it meets the Wassenaarse Slag at a roundabout. The land to its north-west belonged to Rijksdorp and later became bulb fields. A bulb business at number 19a remains, as does a bulb barn listed as a municipal monument.
Along the road are Hotel Duinoord, designed in 1937 by P.W.M. van der Klaauw, and two forest rangers’ houses. By the sea stands the De Badmeester pavilion, rebuilt in 1949 on one of the bunkers of the Vleermuisbunker, with beach huts from 1954. The Vleermuisbunker itself is a municipal monument.

uPVC costs less, needs little maintenance and insulates well; with a woodgrain foil you get a timber look without painting. Aluminium is roughly 15 to 25 percent more, but gives slimmer profiles and larger glass areas.
Not with a wind sensor: motorised screens and awnings then retract on their own. A sun sensor lowers them when the sun hits the glass, even if you are out.
Usually not, as long as the facade looks the same. Some buildings and objects in Rijksdorp are municipal monuments, such as De Witte Hoogt on the Meijboomlaan, and Wassenaar has two protected conservation areas. We check which rules apply to your address.
