All over Wassenaar

Wassenaar is a village centre surrounded by woodland, villas and country houses. Oostdorp borders the old centre; Kerkehout, east of the Rijksstraatweg, mixes detached villas with terraced houses and farms.

The villa parks were laid out in the early twentieth century on the grounds of old country estates: De Kieviet on those of Groot Haesebroek, Rijksdorp around 1920 on the estate of the same name. Maaldrift is a hamlet on the north-east side of the village, between the A44 and the Wassenaarsche Wetering. Wassenaarse Slag is the road through the dunes to the beach, north of Meijendel.

Wassenaar borders The Hague, Leidschendam-Voorburg, Voorschoten, Leiden and Katwijk. In The Hague we mostly work in Benoordenhout, the green district next to Wassenaar, largely built between 1925 and 1935, and in Scheveningen, the former fishing village that became a seaside resort and a district of The Hague.

Central Leiden, inside the old canal ring, is a protected townscape. Oegstgeest borders Leiden and Katwijk, and Katwijk lies on the coast at the mouth of the Oude Rijn. Voorschoten and Leidschendam share the estates zone with Wassenaar.

On the coast or inland

By the sea, at Wassenaarse Slag, Katwijk and Scheveningen, a window frame faces salt in the air and strong wind. There we choose corrosion-resistant hardware and, with aluminium, a coating made for coastal conditions. Inland, insulation, maintenance and the look of the façade matter most.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Wassenaar has more than 300 national monuments (rijksmonumenten). The old village centre, with its twelfth-century church beside an open green meadow and the Plein square with the village pump, has been a protected townscape since 1967. Since 2007 the same applies to the estates zone of Wassenaar, Voorschoten and Leidschendam-Voorburg: farmland interspersed with country houses, large estates and varied villa districts.

Part of Benoordenhout is protected too. There, rules apply to profiles, glazing bars and colour. Usually no permit is needed if the façade looks the same; we check per address.
