Homes in Voorschoten: each era asks a different question
According to the municipal design guidelines (welstandsnota), most of the housing dates from the boom years of the 1950s and 1960s: mainly terraced houses and walk-up flats on a straight grid. In Vlietwijk, extensions, cladding and mixed colours have gradually worn away the original unity of the rows, and new frames can bring some of that calm back.
The older 1930s extensions have terraced and semi-detached houses in earth-toned brick, with red tiled roofs, bay windows and dormers. Here everything comes down to proportion: a new frame follows the lines and divisions of the old one, or the look of the whole row changes.
In the neighbourhoods built after 1970 the question shifts from preservation to comfort: more glass towards the garden or water, better insulation and a front door that closes properly.
