Terraces, corner houses and flats in Kerkehout
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) counts just over 530 homes and about 1,080 residents in Kerkehout. More than half are mid-terrace, a fifth end-of-terrace and another fifth flats. Almost four in ten homes predate 1945, a quarter date from 1945 to 1965, and about two thirds are rented.
The first blocks, from 1919, are by A. Broese van Groenou: 41 homes and two shops, mostly single-storey under red tiles, with timber windows, frames and doors, a transom light (bovenlicht) over each front door and dormers with a mono-pitch roof. In 1928 the practice Granpré Molière, Verhagen & Kok followed with ladder-glazed front doors; on those blocks most windows and doors have since been replaced.
Kerkehout lies within the national conservation area of the Wassenaar estates zone, designated in 2007, and the municipality calls the pre-war blocks the backbone of the streetscape. With new windows, what counts is what you see from the street: the pattern of fixed and opening sections, the transom and the colour.
