Villas with thatch, bay windows and glazing bars
The CBS neighbourhood of De Kieviet is larger than the villa park, reaching Groot Haesebroekseweg and Meijendelseweg. It has just over 550 homes: three quarters detached, a fifth semi-detached, hardly any flats or terraces. More than half were built before 1945 and over eight in ten are owner-occupied.
The park itself was mostly built between 1911 and 1930, with detached and paired villas by architects such as J.J. Brandes, C.M. Kranenburg, M.E. van de Wall and A.H. Wegerif. The conservation-area description singles out the English cottage style: weatherboarded gables, bay windows, conservatories and glazing bars under complex thatched roofs.
Municipal descriptions of the villas keep mentioning the same details: timber windows with glazing bars, shutters and leaded glass at the entrance and stairwell. A whole series of houses also has steel windows, from Brandes and H.C. Lelie to Huis Erdman on Kievietslaan, designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1961.
