A sliding door (schuifpui) turns the garden into part of the room. In Wassenaar we fit lift-and-slide doors in uPVC or aluminium, in two, three or four sections, with a low or flush threshold if you like. With that much glass, the next question is how to keep the summer sun out. That is why sliding doors and sun shading share this page.

At the showroom on the Langstraat we go through your rear facade with you: how wide the opening is, which layout fits and which sun shading goes with it.

How a lift-and-slide door works

With a lift-and-slide door (hefschuifpui, HST) you first turn the handle. The sash lifts slightly off its seals and rests on rollers, so you can slide it aside with little effort and almost silently. Turn the handle back and the sash lowers into the seals again, closing the door tightly all round.

That is why even a large, heavy sash stays easy to operate. In uPVC we use the Aluplast HST system; in aluminium the frames are slimmer.

Lift-and-slide or slide-and-tilt?

The slide-and-tilt door (schuif-kiepdeur) is the lighter option. The sash can tilt open for ventilation, like a tilt window; to slide, it first moves slightly inwards and then glides in front of the fixed pane.

OperationLift-and-slide: lift, then slide. Slide-and-tilt: tilt, or pull in and slide.
VentilationLift-and-slide: slide open a little. Slide-and-tilt: also in the tilt position.
SizeLift-and-slide: suits large, heavy sashes too. Slide-and-tilt: a lighter construction.
ThresholdLift-and-slide: low or flush threshold possible.

Sliding doors in Wassenaar: 2, 3 or 4 sections

A sliding door combines sliding and fixed sections. The more fixed glass, the lower the price per m², because a fixed pane needs no lift-and-slide hardware.

  • Two sections

One sash slides in front of a fixed pane. Simple and good value per m².

  • Three sections

Three panes side by side, for a wider opening.

  • Four sections

For example two sashes in the middle that slide to the sides, for a wide opening.

  • Extra fixed glass

A fixed side panel or transom enlarges the glass wall without adding moving parts.

A low or flush threshold

A lift-and-slide door can have a low or flush threshold (drempel). With a flush threshold you walk from the room onto the terrace without a step, which helps with a walking frame, a pushchair or a full tray. Rainwater must still drain away outside, so during the measuring visit we look at the floor and terrace levels and at how the frame meets the brickwork.

Glass and insulation

A sliding door is often the largest area of glass in the house, so the glass largely decides how warm the room stays. As standard that is HR++ (Ug around 1.1). Triple glazing (HR+++, Ug around 0.5) keeps more heat in and reduces noise; it costs around € 90 per m² more, which adds up across a wide door.

Triple glazing comes with warm-edge spacers (warme afstandhouders), which keep the edge of the glass warmer, so condensation forms less easily along the bottom of the door.

Or garden doors after all?

Hinged garden doors (tuindeuren), single or double, with or without sidelights and a transom, are an alternative for a narrower opening. They open the doorway completely but swing into the room or onto the terrace. A sliding door needs no room to swing.

Sun shading in Wassenaar: screens, blinds and awnings

External sun shading stops the sun before it reaches the glass. With curtains or indoor blinds, the heat is already inside. For sun shading in Wassenaar we fit four types.

  • Screens

A fabric blind that lowers in front of the window. The heat stays out, the view stays.

  • External venetian blinds (geveljaloezieën)

Outdoor blinds with adjustable slats, so you decide how much light comes in.

  • Folding-arm awning (knikarmscherm)

Fabric on hinged arms over the terrace, for shade outside.

  • Drop-arm awning (uitvalscherm)

An awning that drops out at an angle, for balconies and windows.

Roller shutters in Wassenaar: surface-mounted or built-in

A surface-mounted roller shutter (voorzetrolluik) has its box on the façade, so it also suits existing windows. A built-in shutter (inbouwrolluik) is concealed and is the logical choice when you are replacing the frames at the same time.

Closed roller shutters insulate, darken the room, reduce outside noise and slow down burglars. You operate them by hand or electrically.

Controls and sensors

Electric roller shutters work with a switch, a remote control or an app. With a timer they open and close at set times, also while you are on holiday.

Electric sun shading can work with sun and wind sensors. The sun sensor lowers the fabric when the sun is on the façade; the wind sensor retracts it in strong wind. Close to the sea, where it is often windy, that protects the fabric and arms, even when you are not at home.

Large glass walls facing south

A glass wall facing south or west lets in welcome sun in winter but can heat a room considerably in summer. A screen or external blind in front of the door keeps that heat out while you still see the garden.

Planning a new sliding door? Include the sun shading from the start. We can then allow for the position of the box and the power supply, and nobody needs to work on the façade a second time.

Measuring and fitting

During the free measuring visit (gratis inmeten) we look at the opening, the threshold and the position of any sun shading. Within 24 hours you receive a quote with door, glass and fitting as separate items.

A uPVC sliding door has a lead time of 4 to 6 weeks, an aluminium one 6 to 10 weeks. Our own fitting team removes the old frame and installs the new door on a fixed date. On the first floor 15 percent is added to the fitting cost, with scaffolding 30 percent.

Questions we often hear

What is the difference between a sliding door and a lift-and-slide door?

On a lift-and-slide door, the handle lifts the sash before it slides. That keeps even a large sash light to move, and when closed it seals well. The slide-and-tilt door is a lighter option that can also tilt open.

Which sun shading suits a sliding door?

Screens and external venetian blinds hang in front of the glass and keep the heat out. If you also want shade on the terrace, a folding-arm awning can be added.

Can sun shading cope with the wind on the coast?

With a wind sensor, electric sun shading retracts the fabric by itself in strong wind, even when you are not at home. For doors close to the sea we also use corrosion-resistant hardware.

Screens or roller shutters: which should I choose?

Screens keep the heat out and leave the view open, which suits a living room. Roller shutters close the window off completely: they darken, insulate, reduce noise and slow down burglars, which works well in a bedroom.

How long until my sliding door is fitted?

The lead time is 4 to 6 weeks for a uPVC door and 6 to 10 weeks for aluminium. You get a fixed installation date, and our own fitting team installs the door.

Can a sliding door have a low threshold?

Yes, a lift-and-slide door can have a low or flush threshold. With a flush threshold, we check the terrace level and rainwater drainage during the measuring visit.
